Like the extreme music they created, San Francisco's Possessed seemed cursed by dark and wickedness forces throughout their troubled life history. Formed by guitar player Mike Torrao and drummer Mike Sus in 1983, the chemical group would lose first vocaliser Barry Fisk to felo-de-se in front even graduating out of their garage band status. They persisted though, and after recruiting vocalist/bassist Jeff Becerra and guitar player Brian Montana, the band was offered a slot on Brian Slagel's Metal Massacre 6 compiling. Possessed's fierce sound directly stood out from their competition and john Drew the tending of Combat Records, with whom they sign in 1985 after replacement Montana with guitar player Larry LaLonde. Issued later that class, the brutal Seven Churches was arguably the first gear genuine death metal album and set the stage for the genre's breaking away from thrash. Their moment movement, Beyond the Gates, was released, appropriately enough, on Halloween 1986, merely didn't take the like wallop as its predecessor. After transcription the five-track EP The Eyes of Horror the following class (produced by LaLonde's guitar teacher Joe Satriani), the band distinct to ring it quits. Two years later, frontman Becerra was shot during a mugging and left field paralyzed from the waistline down. LaLonde would go on to a longsighted career with way-out trio Primus and Torrao went as far as recording some demos with a new Possessed lineup in front dismantling the grouping once once again. A compiling called Victims of Death was released in 1993.
